Smart VIN Check

How much does a CARFAX report cost?

What you pay depends on where you buy it and how many cars you’re checking. Here are the options, from free to full price.

Updated October 2026

The price on carfax.com

A single CARFAX report costs $44.99 when you buy it from carfax.com. CARFAX also sells multi-report packages on its own site; their prices change, so check carfax.com for the current offer.

Free from the seller

Many dealers show the CARFAX report on the car’s listing or hand it over when you ask. Always ask first: if the seller already has a report, you can read it for free. Check that the VIN printed on it matches the car (dashboard, door frame and title), and look at the date it was run: anything reported after that date isn’t on it.

Less than retail here

We buy CARFAX reports at a wholesale rate and sell each one for $8.99. You get the same report, delivered to your account and by email, usually within a few minutes.

If you’re comparing several cars, a pack brings each report down to $6.29. Pack reports never expire.

Letters and numbers, no I, O or Q. It’s on the dashboard by the windshield, on the driver’s door frame, and on the title.

What the price buys

  • Title brands reported in any state: salvage, junk, rebuilt, flood, lemon buyback.
  • Accidents and damage reported to CARFAX, with dates.
  • Odometer readings over the car’s life, to spot a rollback.
  • Number of owners, how the car was used, and registration history.
  • Service and maintenance records reported to CARFAX.

A report only lists what was reported. Repairs paid in cash at a shop that doesn’t report won’t appear, so a clean report is a reason to inspect, not a reason to skip the inspection.

Free checks worth doing first

  • NICB VINCheck: theft and total-loss records from participating insurers.
  • NHTSA recalls: open safety recalls for the VIN.
  • Our free VIN decoder: year, make, model and factory equipment, so you know the listing describes the right car.

Questions

Is a cheaper CARFAX report the real report?

Here, yes: it’s the CARFAX report for that VIN, bought at a wholesale rate and delivered as CARFAX produces it. We don’t edit it.

Do I pay if there’s no report for my VIN?

No. If a report can’t be produced, its cost goes back to your account automatically, and we refund it to your card if you ask.

How long is a CARFAX report valid?

It shows the history up to the day it was run. If you wait weeks to buy, events after that date won’t be on it.
