A CARFAX report for less
The report doesn’t change with the price you pay for it. Here’s how buying through us works, and how to make sure any report you’re handed is genuine.
Updated October 2026
How the price can be lower
We buy reports from a licensed data supplier at a wholesale rate, the way businesses that check many cars do, and pass that rate on. You pay per report, with no subscription.
A CARFAX report costs $8.99 here, against $44.99 on carfax.com.
Buying for several cars? A pack brings each report down to $6.29, and pack reports never expire.
What you receive
- Enter the VIN. We decode it for free first, so you can check it’s the right car.
- Pay by card or crypto. No account needed: your email is enough, and your account is created when the payment is confirmed.
- We order the report. It usually arrives within a few minutes, in your account and by email as a PDF.
If the report can’t be produced for that VIN, the cost goes back to your account automatically.
How to spot a fake report
Edited or invented reports circulate in private sales, especially as screenshots or PDFs sent by the seller. Before you trust a report you didn’t order yourself:
- Check the VIN on the report against the dashboard, the driver’s door frame and the title.
- Look at the date the report was run. An old report can’t show what happened since.
- Compare the odometer reading on the report with the car’s dashboard.
- If anything doesn’t add up, order your own copy for the VIN. A report you ordered is one nobody could edit.
When you don’t need to pay at all
Many dealers include the CARFAX report in the listing or give it to you if you ask. Ask first. If the seller won’t share one, that tells you something too.
Questions
Are you CARFAX?
No. Smart VIN Check is an independent reseller, not affiliated with or endorsed by CARFAX, Inc. We sell the CARFAX report for a VIN; we don’t produce it.
Can I get a refund?
If a report can’t be produced, its cost comes back automatically. A delivered report isn’t refundable, except when it’s for the wrong VIN or the file is broken. See the refund policy.
Which VINs can you check?
CARFAX covers vehicles sold in the United States and Canada. For other markets there may be few or no records.
