Alberta VIN check
Alberta decides a car’s status by what the insurer did with it, and it requires paperwork from the seller when a car is salvage or comes from outside the province. Here is how to read those signals.

When a car becomes salvage in Alberta
Under section 2 of the Vehicle Inspection Regulation, a damaged car is a salvage motor vehicle when an insurer replaces it, pays for it and takes ownership, or pays out its pre-damage value without taking it. The same applies to a recovered stolen car that was damaged while stolen. Damage limited to hail on the outer body sheet metal doesn’t count.
Section 5 adds that if a jurisdiction outside Alberta designated the car salvage, or gave it a substantially similar status, it is deemed salvage once it is brought into Alberta. A US salvage title follows the car here.
Non-repairable: parts and scrap only
A salvage car is non-repairable when it has no resale value except as parts or scrap. Section 6 lists examples, including a car:
- immersed in liquid to the bottom of the dashboard, or to a level affecting major electrical components
- burned or heat-damaged in two or more compartments, or enough to affect high-strength steel
- with a full frame that needs both cab and frame replaced
- with a unibody damaged across the floor, cowl and A-pillar, or the rocker panel and B-pillar into the floor
- recovered after theft with substantially all body panels or interior parts missing
Getting back on the road, and what the seller must give you
A car stops being salvage when a salvage motor vehicle inspection certificate is filed with the Registrar, and it can’t be registered without one. A licensed technician issues it after the car passes inspection at a licensed facility, and the certificate expires 14 days after it is issued.
Alberta’s Vehicle Information Report
Anyone can order a Vehicle Information Report (VIR) by VIN, online or from a registry agent. It shows the vehicle’s description, its status (such as active, rebuilt or salvage), the odometer reading if one was given, registration dates and locations, and the number of liens registered in Alberta. For lien details you buy a Personal Property Registry search from a registry agent.
The province is clear about the limit: the VIR covers Alberta information only, and the Government of Alberta doesn’t receive stolen-vehicle data. For theft, it points buyers to the Canadian Police Information Centre database.
Cars from the US
To register a car bought outside Canada you need the Transport Canada Vehicle Import Form, proof of ownership and the right inspection. That makes the car’s US record the missing piece. Our CARFAX and AutoCheck reports cover US history only: title brands from every state, accident and damage records, auction sales and odometer readings. They don’t include Canadian records.
Checklist for buying in Alberta
- Check the seller’s ID and proof of ownership, and match the VIN on the car.
- Order a VIR and read the status line: salvage, rebuilt and non-repairable each change the deal.
- Get a Personal Property Registry search for liens.
- Ask for the salvage or out-of-province inspection certificate, or the seller’s written statement.
- If the car was imported, run a US history report for flood, salvage and odometer records.
- Search the CPIC stolen-vehicle database and have an inspection facility look at the car.
Questions
Is a US salvage car still salvage in Alberta?
Yes. Section 5 of the Vehicle Inspection Regulation deems a car designated salvage (or a similar status) outside Alberta to be salvage once it is brought in. It needs a salvage motor vehicle inspection certificate before it can be registered.
Does the VIR show accidents in other provinces or the US?
No. Alberta says the VIR covers Alberta information only and doesn’t include records from other places the vehicle was registered.
Can a flood car be repaired and registered in Alberta?
A salvage car immersed in liquid to the bottom of the dashboard, or to a level affecting major electrical components, is listed as non-repairable, which means parts or scrap only.
