Smart VIN Check

Quebec VIN check

In Quebec, the law protects a used-car buyer well when the seller is a dealer and much less when it is a private individual. The checks you need depend on who is selling.

Updated October 2026

First, make sure the car is paid off

A car can be pledged as security for a loan or sold on an instalment contract, and the debt can follow it to you. Quebec’s Office de la protection du consommateur (OPC) tells buyers to search the Registre des droits personnels et réels mobiliers (RDPRM), run by the ministère de la Justice, before paying. The search has a fee, but it is the way to know a creditor won’t seize the car later.

Buying from a dealer: read the label

Every Quebec dealer selling road vehicles needs a permit from the OPC and must show the permit number on the contract. Each used car on the lot carries a label, and what it says becomes part of your contract (except the price and the warranty terms, which can still change). The label must give:

  • the price, the full description and serial number (VIN), and the odometer reading, plus the real distance if it differs
  • the car’s warranty class (A, B, C or D)
  • past use as a taxi, driving-school car, rental, police car, ambulance or demonstrator, and the business that owned or leased it
  • repairs made since the dealer got the car
  • a statement that the dealer will provide a mechanical inspection certificate if one is needed to register the car, for example because it comes from outside Quebec or was declared a total loss
For contracts signed since 5 April 2024, according to the OPC.

B5 years or less, up to 100,000 km3 months or 5,000 km

DOlder than 7 years or over 120,000 kmNone

Buying privately: fewer protections

The Consumer Protection Act doesn’t cover a sale between two individuals. Your main recourse is for a hidden defect (vice caché), and wording such as “sold as is” or “at the buyer’s risk” can weaken even that. The OPC also warns about curbsiders (faux particuliers): dealers posing as private sellers, often to move cars in poor shape. Signs include one phone number on several ads, a seller who can’t receive you at home, or one who offers to handle the transfer himself.

For a private sale, the OPC suggests getting the car’s history through the SAAQ’s SAAQclic service or a history company, checking the Canadian Police Information Centre for theft, searching the RDPRM, and having a mechanic inspect the car at your own expense.

Cars that came from the US

SAAQ records cover the car’s time in Quebec. If it was imported, its earlier life is in US records. Our CARFAX and AutoCheck reports cover US history only: title brands from every state (salvage, flood, rebuilt), US accidents, auction sales and odometer readings. They don’t include Quebec or other Canadian records, so use them alongside SAAQ and RDPRM checks.

Letters and numbers, no I, O or Q. It’s on the dashboard by the windshield, on the driver’s door frame, and on the title.

Checklist before you sign

  1. Search the RDPRM by serial number for any debt on the car.
  2. With a dealer, check the permit number, read the label and note the warranty class.
  3. With a private seller, look for curbsider signs and get every promise in writing.
  4. Get the SAAQ history, and a US history report if the car was imported.
  5. Have a mechanic inspect it and take a real test drive, not a lap around the block.

Questions

Does a used car from a Quebec dealer come with a warranty?

If it is in class A, B or C, yes: the warranty of good working order covers parts and labour for the period of its class, even if the dealer says the car has no warranty. Class D cars, older than 7 years or over 120,000 km, don’t get it.

How do I check for a lien in Quebec?

Search the RDPRM with the vehicle’s serial number. It shows whether the car secures a loan or carries a debt such as an instalment sale.

Will a US report show the car’s Quebec history?

No. Our reports cover the vehicle’s history in the US. For Quebec, use SAAQ records and the RDPRM.
