What an Alabama plate lookup shows you
Our free lookup turns an Alabama plate into the vehicle’s VIN, then decodes it: year, make, model, engine and any open safety recalls. From there you can order a history report on that VIN. Plate results come from a commercial vehicle-data provider.
It never shows the owner’s name or address. Owner details in state motor vehicle records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act (18 U.S.C. § 2721), and only the state can release them, and only for the permissible uses that law lists.
Who issues plates and titles in Alabama
Titles come from the Alabama Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicle Division, which issues titles and keeps vehicle records. Plates and registrations are handled by your county’s local licensing office; the department lists each county’s office on its site.
Alabama plates belong to the owner, not the car. The department says the registrant removes the plate when the vehicle is sold or disposed of, and may be able to move it to a newly acquired vehicle. So a used car sold privately should normally come without plates. If a seller leaves theirs on, the plate still points to their registration, not yours, and a lookup on it may show a different car.
Getting a title or registration record in Alabama
The Department of Revenue takes requests for certified copies of title and registration records, and for title histories, through the Records Request Portal on MyDMV. Under the state’s rule on record requests, the requester pays the fees set by § 32-8-6 of the Code of Alabama electronically, and approved records come back on a Certified Record Response Form (MV 32-8-6 R).
Personal information in those records is released only to an authorized requester with a permissible use under the DPPA, such as an insurer, a court or law enforcement. Registrants can opt in or out of disclosure with form MV-DPPA-2. A curious buyer is not on that list, which is why a plate search on any private site stops at the vehicle.
Salvage and rebuilt titles in Alabama
Alabama treats a car as a salvage vehicle, a total loss, when an insurer or other payer settles a damage claim at 75% or more of its fair retail value before the damage. A salvage car can’t be registered or driven on public roads until a rebuilt title is issued, and it must be restored in Alabama to its pre-damage operating condition and pass the department’s rebuilt inspection first.
Under § 32-8-87(p), a salvage car can be sold without a salvage title in the seller’s name, but the buyer must get a written disclosure stating that the title contains the designation salvage or rebuilt. Brands such as parts only, non-rebuildable or junk from another state mean the car can never be rebuilt in Alabama. Read more in salvage title check.
Before you buy a car with Alabama plates
- Match the VIN from the plate lookup with the VIN on the dashboard, the driver’s door label and the title. Any mismatch is a reason to stop.
- Ask whether the plate on the car is the seller’s own and whether it comes off at sale, as Alabama rules expect.
- If the title says salvage or rebuilt, ask for the rebuilt inspection paperwork and the bills of sale for replaced parts.
- Run a history report for title brands from every state, insurer total losses and odometer readings. See odometer rollback check.
- Use the VIN decoder to confirm the engine and trim match the listing, and compare report prices on pricing.
