What we collect, why, who handles it, and how to have it deleted.
What we collect
- Your email address, to deliver reports and give you access to your account.
- The VINs you check and the reports and orders on your account.
- Payment status and amounts. Card details are entered on our payment partner’s page and never reach us.
- A one-way hash of your IP address on orders, to limit abuse. We don’t store the IP itself.
Cookies
We use only the cookies the site needs: your sign-in session, the order you are paying for while you are on the payment page, and a referral code if you arrived through a partner link. We don’t use advertising cookies.
Camera
If you scan a VIN with your camera, the image is read on your device and never sent to us.
Who processes it
Our hosting and database providers (Vercel, Supabase), our report supplier (it receives the VIN, not your identity), our payment partners (the card checkout provider and NOWPayments for crypto), Cloudflare for bot protection, and our email provider for sending your reports. The free VIN decoder sends the VIN to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s public service. When you ask us to read your reports, or to read a VIN from a photo, the reports, your questions or the photo go to Anthropic, the company whose AI model writes the answer. Anthropic doesn’t use them to train its models. We keep the reading and your questions in your account; the photo isn’t stored.
How long we keep it
Your reports and orders stay in your account until you ask us to delete it. Order records needed for accounting are kept as long as the law requires.
Your choices
Ask us for a copy of your data, a correction, or deletion of your account at contact@smartvincheck.com. We may ask you to write from the email on the account so we know it’s you.
Emails
We email you about your orders and reports. If you start a checkout and don’t finish it, we may send one reminder. We don’t send newsletters without your consent.
