What an Idaho plate lookup tells you

Our free lookup turns an Idaho plate into a VIN and decodes it: year, make, model, engine and open safety recalls. With the VIN you can order a history report before you go further. Plate results come from a commercial vehicle-data provider.

The owner’s name and address aren’t part of the result. The federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act (18 U.S.C. § 2721) protects that information in state motor vehicle records, and Idaho releases it only to requesters with a permissible use.

Who issues plates and titles in Idaho

The Idaho Transportation Department’s Division of Motor Vehicles (ITD) sets the rules, but most buyers deal with a county assessor’s motor vehicle office. After a private sale, file the title there within 30 days of the transfer to avoid a late-filing penalty, then register the car at the same time.

The seller has a job too: ITD asks the seller to file a Release of Liability within 5 days of handing over the car. A car coming from another state, or one never titled in Idaho, needs a VIN inspection first. A law officer, a DMV employee, a military police officer or an Idaho-licensed dealer can do it.

Getting an Idaho vehicle record

ITD takes motor vehicle record requests online or on paper with the Motor Vehicle Record Request, form ITD 3374, and lists the fee as $7 per record. You can hand the form in at a county DMV office or mail it to ITD in Boise. Fees aren’t refunded if no record is found.

Personal information on those records goes only to parties the DPPA authorizes, and the requester signs under penalty of perjury that they qualify. Anyone else can ask only for the parts of the record that hold no personal information.

Idaho title brands a buyer may see

When an insurer pays a total loss, the car gets a salvage certificate, which replaces the title as the ownership document. Once it is repaired to Idaho’s equipment standards, the owner takes the salvage certificate to the county assessor with a Salvage Vehicle Statement (ITD 3311), which asks who did the repairs. The new title carries the brand Rebuilt Salvage, and ITD says it stays on the title for the life of the vehicle.

Two more brands to know: Theft Recovery, for a recovered stolen car titled without damage, and brands from other states, which carry forward onto an Idaho title. Our salvage title check guide explains what a salvage history means for you as a buyer.

Before you buy a car with Idaho plates

  • Check that the VIN from the lookup matches the dashboard, the driver’s door label and the title or salvage certificate.
  • If the car came from another state, ask whether the Idaho VIN inspection has been done.
  • Look in the title’s brand area for Rebuilt Salvage or Theft Recovery, and ask who repaired the car.
  • Run a history report for brands and total losses from every state and for odometer readings. See odometer rollback check.
  • Use the VIN decoder to confirm engine and trim, and see report options on pricing.
