What the decoder tells you about a BMW
We pass the VIN to NHTSA’s vPIC service and show the fields BMW reported: model year, model and series, body, drive type (rear-wheel or xDrive), engine displacement, cylinders and fuel, whether it is a plug-in hybrid or electric, the plant, airbag positions and weight class. Below that are the recalls NHTSA lists for the same year and model. The decode won’t reveal how the car has been treated: title brands, accident or total-loss records and odometer history all come from a history report (pricing). For other brands, open the VIN decoder.
BMW manufacturer codes (WMI)
| WMI | Manufacturer as registered | Vehicle type |
|---|---|---|
| WBA | BMW AG | Passenger car |
| WBS | BMW M GmbH | Passenger car |
| WBY | BMW AG | Passenger car |
| 3MW | BMW AG | Passenger car |
| 3MF | BMW AG | Passenger car |
| WBX | BMW AG | Multipurpose passenger vehicle (MPV) |
| WB5 | BMW AG | Multipurpose passenger vehicle (MPV) |
| 5UX | BMW Manufacturer Corporation / BMW North America | Multipurpose passenger vehicle (MPV) |
| 5YM | BMW Manufacturer Corporation / BMW North America | Multipurpose passenger vehicle (MPV) |
The leading character is the country code: W for Germany, 5 for the United States and 3 for Mexico. BMW’s 2027 filing shows how it spreads models across codes: WBS on M3 and M4 models, WBY on the electric i5 and i7, 3MW on the M240i coupe, 3MF on the M2, 5UX on the X3, X5, X6 and X7, and 5YM on the XM and X6 M Competition.
BMW’s positions 4 to 8, read as one block
Unlike makers that give each character its own job, BMW’s filing explains positions 4 to 8 together: the five characters stand for one combination of line, series, body type, GVWR class, engine and restraint layout. Change one element and the code changes. In the 2027 sheet, a 530i and a 530i xDrive differ in position 4, and an i5 eDrive40 and an i5 xDrive40 differ there too. That is why it is safer to let the decoder translate the block than to guess one character at a time.
Position 11 is the plant. BMW’s 2027 filing lists C for Dingolfing, F for Munich, 5 for Regensburg and 7 for Leipzig in Germany; W for Graz in Austria; 3 for Born in the Netherlands; 8 for San Luis Potosí in Mexico; and 9 for Greer, South Carolina.
BMW-specific checks
- M car or M badge? A true M3 or M4 from the 2027 filing starts with WBS. An M-badged model such as the M440i stays on WBA, so the WMI helps separate the two.
- Model year: position 10 is V on every car in the 2027 filing. Older years are in VIN year codes.
- Recalls: the decoder lists recalls for the model. To see whether this car’s repair was done, enter its VIN at NHTSA or ask a BMW center.
Before you buy a used BMW
- Make sure the VIN on the dash, on the door label and on the title match exactly.
- Check that the decoded model, engine and drive type agree with the ad, especially xDrive versus rear-wheel drive.
- Compare the mileage with earlier records in a history report; see odometer rollback check.
- Check for salvage, rebuilt or flood brands (salvage title check).

Questions
How can I tell an M car from its VIN?
Look at the first three characters. In BMW’s 2027 filing, the M3 and M4 use WBS (BMW M GmbH), while M Performance models like the M440i use WBA. The XM and X6 M Competition use 5YM.
Was my BMW built in the United States?
Check position 11 rather than the first character alone. BMW’s filing lists plant code 9 for Greer, South Carolina, and vPIC registers 5UX and 5YM to BMW’s U.S. company. The decoder shows the plant NHTSA has for the VIN.
Why do two similar BMWs have such different VINs?
BMW treats positions 4 to 8 as one code for the whole configuration, so a change of drivetrain or body can change several characters at once.
