What a Dodge decode shows
The tool reads the VIN through NHTSA’s vPIC service and returns the model year, model, trim and series, body and doors, drive type, engine displacement and cylinders or the electric drive, fuel type, assembly plant, airbags and GVWR. Recalls NHTSA has filed for that year and model appear underneath. The decode stops at the factory: it says nothing about salvage or flood titles, accidents or mileage since. A history report covers those (pricing); for other brands, use the VIN decoder.
Dodge manufacturer codes (WMI)
| WMI | Manufacturer as registered | Vehicle type |
|---|---|---|
| 2C3 | FCA Canada Inc. | Passenger car |
| 1C4 | FCA US LLC | Multipurpose passenger vehicle (MPV) |
| 1C3 | FCA US LLC | Passenger car |
| 2B3 | FCA Canada Inc. | Passenger car |
| 1B3 | FCA US LLC | Passenger car |
| 1D4 | FCA US LLC | Multipurpose passenger vehicle (MPV) |
The first character is the country of manufacture: 1 for the United States and 2 for Canada here. A Charger with a 2 at the start was built in Canada; a Durango starting with 1 in the United States. vPIC lists the C-series codes such as 2C3 for Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat and Lancia together, while 2B3, 1B3 and 1D4 are listed for Dodge only.
Positions 4 to 8 and 11 on a current Dodge
FCA US’s 2027 code guide, filed with NHTSA, describes the two Dodge lines on sale that year:
- Position 4 is the restraint system on the Charger, and restraints plus GVWR band on the Durango.
- Positions 5 to 7 encode brand, model name, drive wheels, body type, drive position and trim series as one group. Dodge models start that group with D; Ram trucks use R and Jeep models J. On the 2027 Charger, DB is the battery-electric Daytona and DA the gasoline car.
- Position 8 (engine): on the Charger, K is the 400-volt electric drive and P the 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six. On the Durango, G is the 3.6-litre V6, T the 5.7-litre V8, J the 6.4-litre V8 and 9 the supercharged 6.2-litre V8.
- Position 11 (plant): R is Windsor Assembly in Windsor, Ontario (Charger) and C is Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit (Durango).
Dodge-specific things to check
The model year is position 10: V for 2027. Older Dodges use the same 30-year cycle of letters and digits, explained in VIN year codes. If you are looking at a pickup, note that vPIC still lists Ram and Ram Chassis Cab as Dodge models for years such as 2011; newer trucks decode under the Ram make, which has its own page in the related links below.
The decoder’s recalls are matched to the model, not to one car. For a specific VIN, use NHTSA’s recall search or the Mopar recall search, which dodge.com links to.
Before you buy a used Dodge
- Match the VIN on the dash, the door label and the title, character by character.
- If a Durango is sold as a supercharged model, position 8 on a 2027 should be 9; a mismatch is a question for the seller.
- Check the title history for salvage, rebuilt or flood brands (salvage title check).
- Compare the mileage with past readings (odometer rollback check) and look for open recalls by VIN.

Questions
Which part of a Dodge VIN shows the engine?
Position 8. In FCA US’s 2027 guide, a Durango with T has the 5.7-litre V8 and one with 9 the supercharged 6.2-litre V8. Codes are set per model year, so check the decoder’s engine field for older cars.
Where is the Dodge Charger built?
The 2027 guide lists one plant for the Charger: code R, Windsor Assembly in Windsor, Ontario. That is also why its VIN starts with 2, the Canada code.
Can I tell an electric Charger from its VIN?
Yes. On the 2027 Charger, position 8 is K for the electric drive and P for the gasoline inline-six, and positions 5 and 6 read DB for the electric Daytona.
