What a VW decode includes
The decoder queries NHTSA’s vPIC service and lists the details Volkswagen reported for the VIN: model year, model, trim, body, drive type (front-wheel or 4Motion), engine displacement, cylinders, turbo, fuel, transmission, plant, airbags and GVWR. It also pulls the recalls NHTSA has for that year and model. What a decode leaves out is history: title brands, accidents and insurance write-offs, past odometer readings. Those are in a report (pricing). The general VIN decoder covers every other brand.

| 1V2 | Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. | Multipurpose passenger vehicle (MPV) |

| WVW | Volkswagen AG | Passenger car |
| WVG | Volkswagen AG | Multipurpose passenger vehicle (MPV) |
Position 1 is the country: 3 for Mexico, 1 for the United States, W for Germany. In VW’s 2027 breakdown, the Golf GTI, Golf R and Jetta carry 3VW, the Tiguan and Taos 3VV, and the Atlas 1V2. So many of the VWs sold in the U.S. today begin with 3 or 1, not W.
What VW puts in positions 4 to 8 and 11
- Position 4, series: the trim and package. For the 2027 Jetta, 5 is S, B is Sport, 7 is SE and G is SEL; on the Golf GTI, L is S, S is SE and N is Autobahn.
- Position 5, engine type: for example W for the Jetta’s 1.5-litre engine and M for the Jetta GLI’s 2.0-litre; A for the GTI and B for the Golf R.
- Position 6, restraints: airbag layout, such as front side airbags plus side curtains.
- Positions 7 and 8, model: BU is the Jetta and Jetta GLI, CD the Golf GTI and Golf R, DH the Atlas, RM the Tiguan and B2 the Taos.
- Position 11, plant: M is Puebla, Mexico; C is Chattanooga, Tennessee; W is Wolfsburg, Germany.
Because the trim lives in position 4, two Jettas of the same year can differ in only that one character. The decoder shows the trim when NHTSA has it.
Volkswagen checks: VIN window, year and recalls
Volkswagen says the VIN can be read from outside the car through a viewing window at the lower edge of the windshield, in front of the driver’s seat. Position 10 is the model year, V for 2027 (other years in VIN year codes).
VW’s recall lookup checks one VIN against recalls and service campaigns with customer notifications from the last 15 years. NHTSA’s search works too. The decoder’s recall list is for the model, not your car.
Before you buy a used Volkswagen
- Read the VIN through the windshield window and on the door label; both must match the title.
- Check position 4 against the trim in the ad and position 5 against the engine (GTI and Golf R differ there).
- Look for salvage, rebuilt or flood brands (salvage title check).
- Compare the odometer with past readings (odometer rollback check).

Questions
Where are Volkswagens for the U.S. built?
Position 11 tells you. VW’s 2027 breakdown lists M for Puebla, Mexico, C for Chattanooga, Tennessee and W for Wolfsburg, Germany. In that year’s sheet the Atlas is built in Chattanooga and the Jetta, Golf GTI, Golf R, Tiguan and Taos in Puebla.
Which VIN characters show a VW’s trim?
Position 4. In the 2027 breakdown, a Jetta SE has 7 there and a Jetta SEL has G.
Does VW’s recall lookup cover old cars?
Volkswagen says its lookup covers recalls and service campaigns with customer notifications made during the last 15 years. For anything older, use NHTSA’s VIN search or ask a VW dealer.
